Hydrolates, sometimes called hydrosols, are floral waters. Made from water collected from plants by steam distillation to collect their natural oils, they offer similar properties to the essential oils themselves, but on a gentler level. The plant raw material, which consists of flowers, leaves, bark, wood, seeds are placed over water in a distillation apparatus. And when the water is heated, steam flows through the plant material.
The vapor passes through the coil where it condenses into a liquid, and this liquid is called a hydrolase. Well-known hydrosols are rose water, lavender water, lemon balm, and orange juice, which have many uses in aromatherapy. Some organic essential oil hydrosols are also used in cosmetics.
The hydrosol’s mildness makes it useful for those with sensitive skin, the elderly, children, or those suffering from debilitating medical conditions. Hydrosols should be stored in aluminum or glass bottles and away from direct sunlight. Leaving a hydrolase bottle half full for a long time can cause oxidation damage, so it's best to transfer the liquid to a smaller bottle.
They can be refrigerated, which can maximize their shelf life, but no matter where they are stored, it is best to track when you open your hydrosols so you know when they will expire. The hydrosols can be combined with creams, lotions, aloe vera, and clay or used alone to cleanse and tighten the skin.
